The Stevens Square-Loring Heights neighborhood, named after Colonel John Stevens, a early settler who built the first wood frame house west of the Mississippi, is a small and vibrant neighborhood located just south of downtown Minneapolis and in close proximity to numerous amenities. This central Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Lyndale Avenue to the west, Interstate 94 to the north, Interstate 35W to the east and Franklin Avenue to the south.
The Stevens Square-Loring Heights neighborhood has the highest population density in Minneapolis and is characterized by older brownstone apartment buildings and converted multi-unit mansions, several of which, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In fact, the entire neighborhood was designated by the city as a historic district in 1989.
