The Windom neighborhood, which was named after William Windom, a former 19th century Senator and Secretary of the Treasury, is located in southwest Minneapolis with convenient access to major thoroughfares and is bounded by Lyndale Avenue/Highway 121 to the west, Diamond Lake Road to the north, Interstate 35W to the east and Highway 62/Crosstown to the south.
While the majority of the neighborhood is residential (approximately 85%), there are several commercial and retail business throughout Windom, particularly along Nicollet Avenue, 54th Street and the southern portion of the neighborhood, which is primarily industrial and commercial. Nicollet Avenue, which runs north/south through the Windom neighborhood, contains an abundance of restaurants, entertainment, retail and commercial business, many of which, are located within walking distance to most residents in the neighborhood. There is also a park located in the neighborhood at the intersection of 58th Street and Wentworth Avenue that offers recreational activities such as basketball courts, playground and community gardens and playground for the neighborhoods youngest residents.
Families in Windom enjoy the fact that there are two top schools located within the neighborhood including Annunciation, a private catholic elementary and grade school located in the northwest area of the neighborhood and Windom School, a unique dual Spanish immersion elementary school for grades K-5 that is part of the Minneapolis public school system.
The neighborhood is diverse with a good mixture of families, seniors and working professionals. Approximately half of the households within the Windom neighborhood are considered to be owner-occupied with the other half considered as renters. There are several multi-family apartment buildings in the neighborhood, primarily located on the outer edges and southern portion of the neighborhood, with additional multi-family units near the 54th Street and Nicollet Avenue intersection. Average median household income remained slightly higher at $44,423 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $37,974.
Windom has several bus routes throughout the neighborhood and also features easy access to two major thoroughfares, Highway 62/Crosstown and 35W South, which provide residents with quick access to their workplace, the Minneapolis-St Paul International airport and nearby major retail areas such as the Interstate 494 retail corridor to the south and the Southdale retail corridor to the west.
