The Phillips West neighborhood, originally named after Wendell Phillips, a well known 19th century abolitionist, is one of the oldest areas in the city and is a vibrant neighborhood with a mix of residential, commercial and industrial uses. This south Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Interstate 35W to the west, 22nd Street to the north, Chicago Avenue to the east and Lake Street to the south.
Phillips West is the newest neighborhood in Minneapolis, subdivided in 2005 after previously being part of the larger Phillips neighborhood. The neighborhood is culturally diverse and consists of several multi-family buildings, older single-family homes and several unique mansions that were once inhabited by some of the city’s wealthiest residents during the early 20th century. The neighborhood is also home to a couple of the larger employers in Minneapolis: Wells Fargo Mortgage on the southwest corner of the neighborhood and Abbott Northwestern Hospital on the eastern edge of West Phillips. Additionally, due to the presence of a major hospital in the neighborhood, there are numerous ancillary medical related clinics and buildings scattered throughout West Phillips.
Along the Lake Street commercial corridor on the southern boundary of the neighborhood, residents will find casual dining options, ethnic markets, grocery stores and various other service-oriented businesses that cater to local residents. One block east of Phillips West is the Midtown Global Market, which is an internationally-themed public market featuring fresh and prepared foods, several restaurants, and a wide choice of arts and crafts from around the world. Outside of the neighborhood and further west or east along Lake Street, residents of Phillips West will find a plethora of additional dining, entertainment and shopping options.
Phillips West is located in close proximity to several cultural attractions, including the American Swedish Institute. This museum and cultural center dedicated to all things Scandinavian and the rich history of Swedish immigrants in Minnesota is located along Park Avenue in the Turnblad Mansion, one of several breathtaking mansions in Phillips West.
One block north of the West Phillips, is the popular Peavey Park, where Phillips West residents find time to relax and play. This popular 7-acre park features baseball, softball and soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, volleyball courts, walking paths and a large playground and wading pool for the neighborhood children. Additionally, the 5.7 mile Midtown Greenway traverses the southern portion of the neighborhood just North of Lake Street and is used as a virtually traffic-free route across the city for cyclists, inline skaters, runners and pedestrians.
Phillips West features three schools in the neighborhood. Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is a private Roman Catholic school serving graded 9-12, Hope Academy is a private school serving grades K-12 and Urban Academy Charter School serves grades 1-6.
The neighborhood contains few home owners, with owner occupied homes making up only 27% percent of all households in Phillips West, with the remaining 73% of households classified as renters.
