The Ventura Village neighborhood, originally part of the larger Phillips neighborhood which was later subdivided in 2005, takes its name from a Spanish word meaning happiness or luck. This central Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Interstate 35W to the west, Interstates 94 and 35W to the north, Hiawatha Avenue to the east and 22nd and 24th Streets to the south.
Ventura Village is located within walking distance to downtown Minneapolis and is conveniently located next to the busiest thoroughfares in the city providing residents quick access in and out of their neighborhood. The Franklin Avenue Hiawatha Light Rail Transit Station takes residents a few minutes north to downtown Minneapolis or south to the Mall of America and Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport. The additional bus routes that run throughout the neighborhood provide an abundance of public transportation options for residents.
Primarily residential with multi-family dwellings and single-family homes scattered throughout, the main street through the neighborhood, Franklin Avenue, has been revitalized and gentrified in recent years and features shopping, dining and entertainment options. Several newly constructed and renovated buildings have been developed along the Franklin Avenue corridor and including Ancient Traders Market, which features a café, Aldi supermarket and several smaller businesses. The award winning and neighborhood favorite Franklin Bakery is also located along this stretch along with a new credit union, floral shop, recently renovated Franklin Public Library, several newly constructed multi-family buildings and the Franklin Art Works, a visual and performing arts center. Further east or west along Franklin Avenue or north into downtown Minneapolis, Ventura Village residents will find unlimited shopping, dining and entertainment options.
Popular Peavey Park is where Ventura Village residents find time to relax and play. This popular 7-acre park features baseball, softball and soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, volleyball courts, walking paths and a large playground and wading pool for the neighborhood children. East Phillips Park, located just one block south of the eastern portion of the neighborhood in another popular neighborhood park that also features baseball, softball and soccer fields, plenty of green space to have a picnic and a playground and wading pool with fountains for the younger residents in the neighborhood.
The neighborhood has a very detailed master plan created by residents that calls for increased neighborhood continuity, connection, and circulation, which were disrupted as a result of freeway construction in the 1960s. Included in the plan is development over existing neighborhood freeways in order to reconnect with some of the original surrounding neighborhoods.
The neighborhood contains very few home owners, with owner occupied homes making up just 12%% percent of all households in Ventura Village, with the remaining 82% of households classified as renters. Average median household income is $19,405 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $37,974.
