The Windom Park neighborhood, named after William Windom, a 19th century Senator and U.S. Treasury Secretary, is a quiet residential neighborhood that is located in close proximity to downtown Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota and shopping areas. This northeast Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Central Avenue to the west, Lowry Avenue to the north, Stinson Parkway to the east and 18th Avenue to the south.
Windom Park is primarily a residential neighborhood with single-family homes and multi-family apartment buildings, predominantly in the western portion of the neighborhood close to Central Avenue, the neighborhood’s main commercial corridor. This thriving area features Indian grocery stores, Middle Eastern and Latin American restaurants and markets. Some notable landmarks along this stretch include Hold Land Deli, Crescent Moon Bakery, East Side Food Coop and several other entertainment options, nightclubs, casual restaurants, shops and service-oriented businesses that cater to local residents.
Johnson Avenue, which runs through the middle of the neighborhood, features a few smaller businesses including a pizzeria, saloon, tailor, convenience store and art galleries. The neighborhood’s main park, Windom Park, is conveniently located in the northern portion of the neighborhood along Lowry Avenue. Windom Park features baseball, softball and soccer fields, picnic areas, basketball and tennis courts, and a wading pool and playground for the younger residents in the neighborhood. During the winter months, an ice rink is installed and used regularly for broomball, hockey and leisurely skating. Adjacent to the park is the Windom Northeast Recreation Center, which features a gymnasium, indoor basketball and volleyball courts and meeting facilities. The recreation center is also connected to the well-liked Pillsbury School, an elementary school for grades K-5.
Northeast Park, which is just a couple of blocks south of the neighborhood, is another popular park that also features several athletic fields, picnic areas, multiple tennis and volleyball courts, a golf putting course and plenty of open green space. Adjacent to Northeast Park is the Jim Lupient Water Park. This water park is especially popular with neighborhood children during long summer days and features several water slides, a lap pool, wading pool, interactive fountains and concessions.
The nearby 180-acre Columbia Park is also popular with Windom Park residents and features rolling terrain, plenty of wide open green space, walking paths, picnic areas, athletic fields, playground, horseshoe pits, a regulation ruby field and the 18-hole Columbia Golf Club, the second oldest municipal golf course in Minneapolis.
