The Marshall Terrace neighborhood, named after William R. Marshall, a 19th century governor of Minnesota is a quiet neighborhood tucked away in northeast Minneapolis along the banks of the Mississippi River. The neighborhood is bound by the Mississippi River to the West, St. Anthony Parkway to the north, 4th Street and University Avenue to the east and Lowry Avenue to the south.
The neighborhood is diverse and consists of large industrial tracts used for light manufacturing, transportation and utilities. Approximately 20% of the neighborhood, primarily in the center and southern portions of Marshall Terrace, is considered to be residential and features single-family homes and some multi-family apartment buildings scattered throughout.
There are a few commercial businesses in the neighborhood, mostly on the southern border along Lowry Avenue. Residents of Marshall Park will find a thriving shopping area just east of the neighborhood along Central Avenue. This commercial corridor features Indian grocery stores, Middle Eastern and Latin American restaurants and markets. Marshall Terrace Park is the main park within the neighborhood and is conveniently located in a residential area along Marshall Street overlooking the Mississippi River. Besides the amazing views of the river, this popular park features walking paths, baseball and softball fields, basketball courts and a playground and wading pool for the neighborhoods younger residents.
Just east of Marshall Park is the largest park in the region, Columbia Park. This 180-acre park features rolling terrain and plenty of wide open green spaces in addition to walking paths, picnic areas, athletic fields, playground, off-leash dog run and the adjacent 18-hole Columbia Golf Club. Established in 1919, the Columbia Golf Club is the second oldest municipal golf course in Minneapolis and features rolling terrain and mature tress scattered throughout.
During winter time, Columbia Park becomes a winter wonderland and is popular amongst cross country skiers due to the maintained ski trails and the sledding hill, arguably one of the best hills in the city to ride a sled down.
The neighborhood is a good mix between home owners and renters, with owner occupied homes making up 56% percent of all households in Marshall Terrace with the remaining 44% of households classified as renters.
