The Northrop neighborhood, named after Cyrus Northrop, a 19th century President of the University of Minnesota, is a quiet and conveniently located residential neighborhood. This south Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Chicago Avenue to the west, 42nd Street to the north, Cedar Avenue to the east and Minnehaha Parkway to the south.
Primarily residential and characterized by smaller homes built in the 1920’s and 30’s, there are a few commercial areas within the neighborhood that offer Northrop residents numerous and convenient amenities. Chicago Avenue, on the western edge of the neighborhood, is a main commercial corridor and features a variety of quaint restaurants, boutiques and specialty stores. At 48th Street and Chicago, residents will find a charming and trendy area that features the popular restaurants Pepitos and Café Levain, along with a neighborhood tavern, the Turtle Bread Company, Sovereign Grounds Coffee Shop, True Colors Bookstore, a Chinese restaurant, a movie theater and veterinary clinic.
