The Morris Park neighborhood, named after the daughter of Franklin Steele, a wealthy 20th century philanthropist, is the most southeasterly neighborhood in the city of Minneapolis. The neighborhood is bound by 54th Street to the north, 34th Avenue to the west, 46th Avenue to the east and 58th Street and the Twin Cities Air Force Reserve Base to the south. The vast majority of the neighborhood is residential, with the exception of the majority portion of Morris Park south of Highway 62/Crosstown which is the Twin Cities Air Force Reserve Base.
A majority of the single-family homes were built from the 1920s through the 1960s. A large reason for the development in Morris Park during this time was the availability of streetcar routes and rail lines in this area that date back to 1865.
Morris Park is part of the Nokomis East Neighborhood Association (NENA), which encompasses a total of four smaller bordering neighborhoods.
Public and shopping amenities abound for Morris Park and the NENA neighborhoods with parks, lakes, a post office, library and shops either in Morris Park or adjacent neighborhoods.
The neighborhood is centered on the 3.9 acre Morris Park and Recreation center located at the corner of 55th St. and 39th Ave. The park features two different playgrounds for the neighborhoods youngest residents and also has a skateboard park, fields for soccer, baseball and softball, and a wading pool which becomes popular with families during the summer months. Across the street in the southwest part of the park, sits Morris Park Elementary school for grades K-5. There is another school in the neighborhood, Hiawatha Leadership Academy, an open enrollment public charter school that was recently opened in 2007. This public charter school currently enrolls only Kindergarten and 1st grade students but will expand by one class per year until it reaches K-12.
Predominantly a residential neighborhood, the intersection of 34th Avenue and 55th Street in the northwest corner of the neighborhood is the only part of Morris Park with retail and commercial oriented businesses. This charming intersection straight from small town America features a pizza restaurant, neighborhood grill and tavern, independent bookstore, gas/convenience store, antique store, small grocery store and Laundromat. There are a few additional neighborhood businesses located around the 42nd Avenue and 54th Street intersection that cater to Morris Park residents as well.
Morris park residents have quick access to Highway 62/Crosstown via the 34th Avenue Interchange and the Minneapolis light rail transit Hiawatha Line, which carries commuters into downtown Minneapolis and will eventually connect to other future light rail lines, is located just to the east of the neighborhood and is accessible at two nearby stations.
