The Willard Hay neighborhood was named after Frances Willard, a 19th century educator and women’s rights activist and John Hay, a 19th century diplomat and private secretary to Abraham Lincoln. This quiet and mainly residential neighborhood features an abundance of green space and is located in close proximity to downtown Minneapolis as well as to the West Broadway Avenue commercial corridor. This northwest Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Xerxes Avenue to the west, West Broadway Avenue to the north, Penn, Know, James and Irving Avenues to the east and Olson Memorial Highway to the south.
The major commercial and shopping area for the neighborhood is located at the northern border along West Broadway. This thriving corridors features retail shops, a Cub Foods grocery store, CVS Pharmacy, bank branches, gas/convenience stores, salons, neighborhood taverns, entertainment, several dining options and numerous other service oriented businesses that cater to local residents. There are a few other businesses in the neighborhood around the intersection of Penn Avenue and Plymouth Avenue in the southern portion of the neighborhood. Additionally, downtown Minneapolis is located a few minutes southeast of the neighborhood and as the commercial, social, and cultural pulse for the entire region, this vibrant area features numerous cultural attractions, entertainment options, shopping, theaters, hotels and numerous additional dining choices.
There are several acres of parkland and green space within the Willard Hay neighborhood including five city parks. Adjacent to the west of the neighborhood is the 742-acre Theodore Wirth Park, the largest regional park in the Minneapolis Park System and home to Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden, miles of skiing and hiking trails, a snowboard park, 18-hole golf course and swimming beach.
The southwest corner of Willard Hay is home to Bassett's Creek Valley Park, a popular 70-acre park featuring tennis and volleyball courts, baseball, softball and soccer fields, playground and plenty of green space for a picnic. There is also a commuter biking trail that runs through the park, the Luce Line Trail, which connects to nearby Bryn Mawr Park, Theodore Wirth Park and the Cedar Lake Trail, known as America’s first “Bike Freeway” that connects to downtown Minneapolis a few minutes east and other bike trails throughout Hennepin County.
North Commons Park, located in the northeastern portion of the neighborhood, is a large park that features several athletic fields, walking and bike paths, concessions, picnic areas and plenty of green space to just relax and enjoy the scenery. This park is popular with neighborhood children due to the playground, wading pool and adjacent water park, one of only two such water parks in the city.
Three blocks east of North Commons Park, is the smaller Willard Park and further south is the neighborhoods other popular park, Farwell Park.
