The City of Mound is located 22 miles west of downtown Minneapolis nestled along the picturesque bays of the western portion of Lake Minnetonka. The city is home to approximately 9,435 and bordered by Minnetrista to the west and north, and Spring Park, Orono and Lake Minnetonka to the east and south.
Mound is easily accessible via Country Road15/Shoreline Road, the main route that traverses the north shore of Lake Minnetonka and County Road 110/Commerce Boulevard, the main north/south route that passes through the city.
The city’s main retail and commercial district is located in downtown Mound, centered on the intersection of Commerce Boulevard and Shoreline Drive. The Mound downtown area includes John’s Variety and Pets, Scotty B's Restaurant, the Legion, the Pond arena, Jubilee grocery store, True Value Hardware Store, a Barber Shop, gas/convenience store, a community skate park, and a neighborhood pizzeria. Downtown Mound also features the Andrew Sisters Trail, a lighted brick half mile long trail in that starts at a main street goes East, past the boat slips on Lost Lake of Lake Minnetonka. The famous singing sisters grew up in Mound in the 1920’s and returned every year.
Mound is also the birth place of Tonka Toys and the headquarters remained in the city until it was purchased by Hasbro in the 1990’s. Other notable landmarks in the city include the famed Al & Alma's Restaurant and the Minnetonka Drive-In.
With approximately 40% of the city’s area made up of water, Mound is very unique with its winding streets and can be quite easy to get lost. Lakes within Mound include Black Lake, Dutch Lake, Lake Langdon, Saunders Lake, and Seton Lake. Mound boasts over 17 miles of lakeshore and 11 of those miles are on Lake Minnetonka. At over 14,000 acres, Lake Minnetonka is made up of numerous bays, inlets and channels and features over 125 miles of shoreline. The lake is popular for boating, sailing, fishing and swimming.
Mound maintains 27 public parks scattered throughout the city that feature organized sports facilities as well as recreational facilities such as trails and picnic areas. Mound's most popular park, Mound Bay Park, contains a sand beach on Lake Minnetonka, picnic facilities, a park pavilion, boat launch and large playground for the younger residents in the neighborhood. The park is also host to many, fun-filled community events held annually.
Mound is served by the Westonka Public Schools System, a small and excellent school system that also serves the surrounding communities of Mound, Minnetrista, Navarre, Lyndale, Orono, Shorewood, Independence and Spring Park. The Westonka Public Schools System serves approximately 2,300 students through three elementary school, one middle school and Mound-Westonka High School, one of only a few schools in the state of Minnesota to be ranked 10 out of 10 by greatschools.org.
