The Longfellow neighborhood, named after the famous 19th century poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is a diverse neighborhood conveniently located a few minutes southeast of downtown Minneapolis with easy access to numerous retail, shopping and dining options. This southeast Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Hiawatha Avenue to the west, 27th Street to the north, 38th Avenue to the east and 34th street to the south.
The Longfellow neighborhood is mixed with the western portion along Hiawatha Avenue and northern border of the neighborhood mainly featuring industrial, retail and commercial uses. The remainder of the neighborhood is primarily residential with single-family homes and several multi-family apartment buildings scattered throughout.
Due to the Hiawatha Light Rail line, the uses along the Hiawatha Avenue are expected to shift towards more residential dwellings and a few multi-family buildings have been built or are in the process of being built as a result. The Longfellow neighborhood has four light rail stations (more than any other neighborhood in the city) and all four are easily accessible, taking residents north to downtown Minneapolis or south to the Mall of America and Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport.
Lake Street, which dissects the neighborhood, is the main commercial corridor in Longfellow and where many residents go for shopping, dining and entertainment. Along this corridor residents of Longfellow will find major retailers and grocery stores such as Cub Foods, Rainbow Foods, Target, bank branches, several casual dining options, ethnic restaurants, and various other businesses and services catering to local residents.

Brackett Park is situated in the northeast portion of the neighborhood and if another neighborhood recreational destination. The park is highlighted by the Return Journey sculpture, a 35 foot tall rocket that used to be a climbing structure. This popular neighborhood park features baseball, softball and soccer fields, picnic areas, walking paths, tennis courts and a large playground and wading pool.
West River Parkway, which is just east of Longfellow, follows the Mississippi River and also features miles of walking and bike paths, with several tennis courts located along the way. This winding and scenic parkway, which begins in Minnehaha Park, traverses north to downtown Minneapolis and is part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway that directly links to miles of paths, trails and parks throughout the city of Minneapolis.
The Longfellow neighborhood features several churches of different denominations as well as two schools. The Anne Sullivan School, located in the northern edge of the neighborhood is for grades K-8 and Longfellow Middle School, located in the middle of the neighborhood is for grades 5-8.
There are an equal amount of renters and homeowners in the neighborhood, with owner occupied homes making up 50% percent of all households in Longfellow, with the remaining 50% of households classified as renters.
